Wrestling at the Jabbok • Genesis 32:22–32

Genesis 32:22–32 describes the nocturnal struggle between Jacob and an unknown assailant at the Jabbok river. What appears as an evenly matched contest, ends near daybreak with blow dislocating Jacob’s hip. Instead of fighting, he now clings to the assailant (none other than the Lord) refusing to let go until He blesses him. He receives a new name along with divine blessing, and calls the place of encounter, Peniel (“face of God”).
